There are two popular running bamboos of South Jersey, Yellow Groove and Arrow. At first Arrow (Pseudosasa japonica) was not a favorite of mine but after some time it grew on me. This bamboo has a larger leaf and thinner culm, which goes against my first love of bamboo- the large culms. The larger leaf allows this bamboo to grow in shady areas. Knowing this bamboo will grow very dense and quickly I choose to have a long narrow bed to create a screen in the back of the yard. No digging due to my spondylolysis so hired our neighbor to dig it for us. Turned out very nice. Started it out with five plants. I expect this to fill out in the next five years.
